Word can perform two different types of saves when a document is open: fast saves and full saves. With a fast save, the changes to the document are appended to the end of the file. Where as with a full save, changes are incorporated into the document in the same location that the changes are made.
With the Fast Saves option turned on in Word, the size of your documents will likely increase. You may be able to free up some disk space by turning off this option as described in the steps below.
To turn of fast saves in Word:
- Within Word, click Options from the Tools menu.
- Select the Save tab.
- Clear the check box beside the Allow fast saves check option.
- Click OK.
