The Recovery Console is a useful tool for troubleshooting. You can use it to access volumes that can not be accessed when you are in Safe Mode. You can run the Recovery Console from the Windows Server 2003 CD or you can install the utility on your hard drive. The nice thing about installing it is that you don’t need your CD handy to run the program. The installation process is very simple. Keep in mind though that it does require 7 MB of free disk space.
- Insert your Windows Server 2003 CD. Close the setup screen if it appears.
- Click Start and select run.
- Type in the following command where x is the letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive: x:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes to confirm the installation of the Recovery Console.
- Click Esc if you do not want to connect to the Internet.
- Click OK.
- Restart your computer.

For x64 editions of Windows the files can be found in x:\AMD64 rather than x:\i386.

I have a 2003 SERVER that I updated all of the SP on, but now it will not allow me to install the recovery console because the OS is now considered a different version of the os. How can I install this?
