Security Configuration Wizard (Server 2003)

Service packs do more than simply fix known problems with operating systems. They often introduce new administrative and troubleshooting tools. One such tool is the Security Configuration Wizard that is included in Service Pack 1 for Server 2003. As the name implies, administrators can use it to secure a server. The wizard helps administrators disable unused services, block unnecessary ports, modify registry values, and configure audit settings.

The wizard is not automatically installed along with Service Pack 1. You can install the Security Configuration Wizard using the steps listed below:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.

  2. Open the Add or Remove Programs utility.
  3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  4. Select the check box beside Security Configuration Wizard and click Next. Be sure you have the installation files handy.

Once the tool is installed, you can access it from the Start | All Programs | Administrative Tools menu.
