Prevent The Pop-up Blocker From Playing Sounds (XP SP2)

Posted by on Jul 13, 2006 | No Comments

One of the changes you will notice when you install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is the Pop-up Blocker included with Internet Explorer. As the name would imply, it is designed to stop those pesky pop-ups from appearing on your computer.

By default, each time the Pop-up Blocker blocks a pop-up window it will play as sound. This is the Pop-up Blockers way of notifying you that it has detected and blocked a pop-up. If you find this to be more of an annoyance than anything else, you can use the steps below to alter the settings of the Pop-up Blocker so that a sound is not played.

  1. Within Internet Explorer, click Internet Options from the Tools menu

  2. Select the Privacy tab.
  3. Click the Settings button under the Pop-up Blocker section.
  4. Remove the check beside the Play a sound when a pop-up is blocked option under the Notifications and Filter Level section.
  5. Click Close.
  6. Click OK to save your settings.
