Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics

Ah, the movies.
Filmdom is where things take place that only happen in the movies. Whether it’s living happily ever after, or visible laser beams.
Today’s Family First site takes a poke at the physics of the movies, which is mostly bad.
The site is called Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics. Here’s its mission:
In the name of physics decency, to protect the minds of children everywhere, so that they may grow up in a world where they know the difference between speed and velocity, we have taken the responsibility to rate movies for their portrayal of excessively bad physics.
That’s right, we OWE it to our children to teach them that silencers don’t really silence guns, that there are no whooshing sounds in space when ships go by, and cars don’t instantly burst into flames any time they bump into something.
Movies are rated according to accuracy of physics. The range runs from GP (good physics in general) to XP (obviously physics from an unknown universe).
So how do you favorite movies rate? An example of GP is the Tom Hanks vehicle The Road to Perdition. For the most part, flying bullets are realistically portrayed, according to the site.
Then again, there’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, on the XP end of the scale. Among its problems are robots powered by apparent perpetual motion, a helicopter that turns into a submarine (the two devices must withstand virtually opposite forces), and a statue at the bottom of the ocean that stays free of algae and barnacles for 2000 years.
So have fun finding out how your favorite movies rate physics-wise at today’s Family First site.

Wow, like I am so confused, you mean they are saying all that stuff isn’t real? What kind of lunatics are they?
