XPad Text Editor

Sometimes we need a simple text editor for a simple job. Personally, I don’t use many of the big and bulky word processors of the world. Since more of the writing I do is for Online publication, I choose to just stay with something simple. Every so often, I need something even lighter and more compact than my usual writing program though. The XPad Text Editor is about as light as you can get without being Notepad.

Here is how the freeware author describes the XPad Text Editor:

[XPad is a] powerful and simple text editor, with automatic copy to clipboard, links, e-mail and file path managing, capable [of opening] Windows, Linux, and Apple text file formats. Supports UTF-8 encoding. Much more complete than the Windows Notepad, [so it's] a good replacement.

It does pack in a lot of tools for being such a basic freeware download. I like how it keeps most of the options and tools running down both the left and the right side as well. Here is a screenshot of the XPad Text Editor in action.

Now one thing I do not like is that it defaults to Internet Explorer for the browser links. I wish it would look for the default browser instead.

So if you are looking for a very basic text editor, maybe for taking notes or jotting down thoughts, this freeware download is your solution. If you are still looking for something that has a little more in the meat and potatoes department, then you might look towards a program like NoteTab.
