MS Warns Against Security Problems As It Kisses Windows 98 - ME Goodbye

  • No Related Post

Hey party people, if you’re still in the dark, dark ages and running Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, or Windows ME, then Microsoft has a warning for you. Next time you go to Windows Update, you’ll be greeted with a message that Windows 95 users have seen for years: Sorry, Charlie, we won’t support you any more. Facing the aging operating systems’ inability to accept new, better, code from the Windows camp, Microsoft is just going to stop supporting the archaic DOS-based operating systems.

“Due to these fundamental differences, these changes would require reengineering a significant amount of a critical core component of the operating system,” Christopher Budd, a program manager with Microsoft’s security response center, stated.

In all honesty, folks, if you’re still running Windows 98, then you really should be considering catching up with your grandchildren and at least get Windows 2000. If you’re on ME, well, you should be whipped, period.

You know, I have to agree with Microsoft on this one. It is a nightmare to continue to support any type of mass-installed software product that is nearly a decade old. Even as large as Microsoft is, it shouldn’t be expected to continue to support old software. Really, it should be applauded for even supporting it this long. Bravo… but what were you thinking? :)
