Bargain Hard Drives And Patience With PCs

I have geeky plans for Friday night. With luck, I’ll be saving a hundred bucks on a new 200GB hard drive. Over the past twenty years, I’ve learned that patience is a virtue when it comes to PCs. I’ve been patient with all of my boxes. None have fallen victim to errant blows from a sledgehammer, been thrown from a window, or beaten with a baseball bat. Not even my annoyingly noisy PC.
Which brings me to the new bargain hard drive. CompUSA is selling 200GB Seagate IDE drives for only $29.99 at its Midnight March Madness sale… that’s a hundred and ten bucks off the regular price, after rebates.
When the noisy Gateway’s computer lease wrapped up, I picked up the box off lease. It didn’t take me long after I cracked open the case to figure out that the OEM hard drive was the chief culprit. The noise level was entirely reasonable when I started the PC with the drive unplugged.
I’ve been looking for a good deal on a Seagate drive ever since. (The Barracudas have decent cred with regard to low noise levels.) Best Buy has run some nice offers of late, but I never seem to get to the store when they’re in stock.

What happened to low cost harddrives?
