Full Text Classics On The Net

As there was a lot of interest in my last item that drew attention to Gutenberg.net.au, I thought I’d let you know that more public domain books for the Google Books Library project have been loaded - thousands in the most recent batch. Google’s being cautious about copyright; many are only available in the U.S. right now, even though they’re in the public domain elsewhere. You can search for public domain books by going to books.google.com and including in your search terms a year in the format “date:1600-1922″ to limit your search to those books old enough to be in the U.S. public domain.

The High Wire Press from Stanford claims to hold over a million full text science papers.

A list of once banned books is available online together with links to the full text, courtesy of John Ockerbloom at the University of Pennsylvania. (Ulysses, E for Ecstasy by Nicholas Saunders and Alexander Shulgin (1994), Moll Flanders, Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, and many others.

Bartleby.com has the Harvard Classics, which include Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography, Fruits of Solitude by William Penn, Darwin, Sophocles, Euripides, and Homer’s Odyssey. “The Harvard Classics” were published in 1910 as a record of the “progress of man… from the earliest historical times to the close of the nineteenth century.”

The Internet Public Library has links to full text books online covering every genre.
