Removing Partitions When Installing XP

Existing partitions can be removed during the setup of Windows XP. During the text mode phase of setup you will be prompted to choose the partition on which you want to install the operating system. The setup program allows you to create new partitions from free space or change and delete existing partitions. So you have the option of installing Windows XP on a newly created partition or an existing one.
When you perform a clean install of Windows XP, setup will display all the existing partitions and free space on your computer. You will be able to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select an existing partition which can then be deleted by pressing D. Repeat this step to remove any additional partitions.
If you are running setup for the first time, you will need to create and size a partition. Remember the minimum free space required is 1.5GB but plan for more to ensure adequate performance and allow for optimum performance and allow for the addition of optional components, applications and files. Almost guaranteed if you install on a 1.5 GB partition, you will eventually see a message appear that you are running out of disk space. And with a partition of that size, there will be very little you can do to free up space.
It is recommended that during setup you only create and size the partition for the operating system. The remaining free space can be partitioned after setup using the Computer Management tool.
