Manually Install a Modem In XP

The majority of modems these days are compatible with Plug and Play. This means that once they are physically installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, Windows should automatically install the software for them.

Some older modems or external serial modems may not be detected. You can use the Phone and Modem applet within the Control Panel to manually install it.

  1. Click Start and click Control Panel.

  2. Double click the Phone and Modem applet.
  3. On the Modems tab, click the Add button.
  4. The Add Hardware Wizard appears. Click Next to continue.
  5. Click the Have Disk button and browse to the location of the installation disk that came with the modem. Click OK. Click Next.
  6. Select the ports on which you want to install the modem. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish.

The modem should now appear in the list of Modems within the Phone and Modems applet.
