Manufacturers often release new BIOS versions. Before you install Windows XP, it is generally recommended that you upgrade to the latest BIOS version. Older BIOS versions have been known to cause an OS to behave oddly.
The following steps outline the general procedure for upgrading a computer’s BIOS. Keep in mind that the exact procedures that you follow will depend on the instructions provided by the manufacturer and therefore, may vary slightly from those below.
- Download the latest BIOS version from the manufacturer’s Web site. You should consider downloading the current version as well in case the upgrade does not go as planned and you need to go back to it. Some BIOS flash utilities will give you the option of backing up the current BIOS. If the option is available, be sure to use it.
- Most BIOS upgrades will include a Readme file. Review the contents to determine the exact process for upgrading the BIOS. Keep in mind that each manufacturer will have its own procedure.
- Create a bootable floppy disk (if required) and download the BIOS update into the floppy. In most cases it will be a zipped file and will need to be decompressed to your floppy.
- Restart the server using the floppy and start the upgrade as outlined in the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Once the BIOS upgrade is complete, remote the floppy and restart the computer. The new BIOS version should be displayed on the screen.
