Soul Searching

As you can imagine, we’ve been having a lot of fun with gada.be. Every Tuesday, we release a new feature for everybody. Yesterday, we added an RSS feed which contains the top searches for every hour of the day. Interesting to watch trends, if nothing else. Since spammers ruined the idea of keeping subdomains permanent, we had to change our strategy slightly - not a huge deal. You can still perform your gada.be queries the “classic” way (with the query as the subdomain and the category slug as the initial directory), but everything ultimately redirects to a regular ol’ URL. It was fun while it lasted, but at least the core functionality is still intact! It’s still easy to use - and every Tuesday, it’ll get just a little more interesting. That’s something you can look forward to seeing - if searching is your cup of tea. When user accounts roll around, that’s when the fun will truly begin. And yes, it’ll happen soon.

How do you search? Seriously, I’m asking you straight up - how do you search? Where do you search? Do you link to your searches? If so, how do you keep the URLs short enough so that the link isn’t a million miles long? We’ve obviously solved the “shrinkage” problem with gada.be’s URL scheme, but we’re still refining our directive as we receive feedback from our users. Search is big - very big. You likely search for stuff every hour of every day and don’t even realize when you do. I’ve taken to looking into popular searches (at least, the searches that seem interesting - or the searches that pertain to things I normally don’t know anything about). It’s a different way to learn about new things. Ya know, just in case I get accepted as a Jeopardy contestant at some point in the future and am asked about soduku. Thanks to someone’s search, I now know what it is - and the game is apparently all the rage. Seek and ye shall probably find it at a local store.
