Many computer users still connect to the Internet using a modem and their telephone line. If someone on your network reports that they cannot establish a dial-up connection, you should first verify that the modem is working correctly. For advanced troubleshooting you can log modem commands to a text file. You can use the information within the text file to pinpoint any problems that may be occurring during the connection process. For example, the output may indicate that the modem was unable to establish a connection or that the modem you dialed into caused yours to disconnect.

In Windows 95, you can enable modem logging using the following steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click the Control Panel.

2. Within the Control Panel, open the Modems applet.
3. Select your modem, and click Properties.
4. On the Connections tab, click Advanced.
5. Place a check beside the box to Record a log file.

Once logging has been enabled, you can open the modem log using Notepad. In Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, the default name of the log is modemlog.txt. Later versions of Windows will use ModemLog_model.txt.
