The Control Panel includes a utility called Power Options. One of the things you can do in here is configure when your computer goes into suspend modes such as Standby or Hibernation. For example, you can configure the Power Options so your computer goes into Standby mode when you press the power button. What you may not know is that you can also create a shortcut on your desktop that can be used to put your computer into suspend mode. Here is what you have to do:
- Right click the Windows XP desktop, point to New, and click Shortcut.
- Type in the following: rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState.
- Type in a descriptive name for the shortcut.
Once the shortcut appears on your desktop, you can use it to put your computer into a suspended state.

Thanks!! But how do you change the command to making the computer standby rather than hibernating it?
Cheers.

“…For example, you can configure the Power Options so your computer goes into Standby mode when you press the power button. ”
How is this done — I can’t find it anywhere. Will watch this space for your answer. Thank you.
