My T-Mobile Sidekick finally kicked the bucket a few weeks back. Actually, it might have been a couple of months. I’m not senile, I’ve just completely lost track of time. (Living a disconnected mobile life can be like that.) On one hand, mobile devices can be great things. On the other, they can be a heinous digital tether. As nice as it is to be connected, it’s even nicer to occasionally cut that connection. Once you do, you realize how the technology affects both your state of mind and the state of your wallet…

Seeing that I haven’t had a working mobile device, I’ve been giving lots of thought to my next mobile technology move. (There’s plenty of time to mull it over when your thoughts aren’t interrupted with constant e-mail checks.) I’ve been a fan of the Sidekick (a.k.a. Danger HipTop) since it first shipped. But I’m very hesitant to pick up a Sidekick II, when the next version can’t be all that far off. I’m not ready to peel off the c-notes for instant obsolescence.

I’m considering if it would be worthwhile to pick up an inexpensive prepaid cell phone in the interim. Deciphering those prepaid plans is a real trick. The last thing I want to get into is a plan that ends up costing an arm and a leg (or worse).

Why is it that when technology bites us in the rear end, it goes for the wallet?
