Dynamic DNS is a feature that was introduced in Windows 2000. It allows DNS and DHCP to integrate so that the DNS database does not have to be manually updated. So when there is an IP address change, the DHCP server can be configured to update the host record associated with the IP address change.
Some clients can also update their own host (A) records. Computers that are running Windows 2000 and later can perform updates on their own. Where as pre-Windows 2000 clients can not and the DHCP server must perform the updates on their behalf. You can configure Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 computers to perform DNS updates using the following steps.
- Open the Network Connection applet in the Control Panel (Network and Dial-up Connections applet in Windows 2000).
- Right click your local area connection and click Properties.
- Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
- Click the Advanced button and select the DNS tab.
- Select the Register this connection’s addresses in DNS option.
- Click OK.
