Although there are many benefits to installing the latest service pack on your computer, there can also be a downside. One such downside with installing service pack 2 for Windows XP is that some programs may no longer function. Typically, the programs you need to be concerned about are those programs considered to be “older.”
Microsoft has recognized that service pack 2 will cause a loss of functionality for some programs and has published a list of known problems. If you have not yet installed service pack 2 for Windows XP, you should take a look at the related Knowledge Base Article to verify that none of the programs listed are installed on your computer.
