Publish A Non-XP Printer In Active Directory

Publishing a non-Windows XP printer in Active Directory is possible, but the steps are a little different than those performed in Windows XP. Printers attached to older versions Windows and UNIX can be published after they have been properly installed and shared.

You can publish a non-Windows XP printer using the steps that are listed below. These steps assume, of course, that the computer is a member of a domain and you have access to the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Active Directory Users and Computers.

  2. Right click the container in which you want to publish the printer.
  3. Point to New and select Printer.
  4. In the New Object - Printer window, type in the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path of the printer that you want to publish. The UNC is in the form of \\computername\printername
  5. Click OK.
