Publishing a non-Windows XP printer in Active Directory is possible, but the steps are a little different than those performed in Windows XP. Printers attached to older versions Windows and UNIX can be published after they have been properly installed and shared.
You can publish a non-Windows XP printer using the steps that are listed below. These steps assume, of course, that the computer is a member of a domain and you have access to the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.
- Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Active Directory Users and Computers.
- Right click the container in which you want to publish the printer.
- Point to New and select Printer.
- In the New Object - Printer window, type in the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path of the printer that you want to publish. The UNC is in the form of \\computername\printername
- Click OK.
