Things That Make You Say, “Ah-hah!”

Do you remember Disney’s animated version of Robin Hood? Remember the
weird laugh that the King made throughout the movie? That weird
“Ah-ha!” That’s the laugh I used when I heard about this:

Microsoft’s new WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) program was released
the other day (Wednesday the 27th of July). The system was set in place in
hopes
of denying pirates of Microsoft software updates. (Security updates
remain
available for all users in effort to keep unpatched users from harming
patched users).

Sadly, this program that countless Microsoft coders worked on was
foiled
by a simple javascript void execution. The script is
simply
pasted into the address bar at a certain point during Windows Updates,
and
it disables the check.

The javascript void was made available in less than 24 hours of the
WGA
program’s release.

Microsoft uses an ActiveX control to validate users’ software
automatically. It is able to identify a genuine system by doing several
checks. The text string entered into the browser appears to defeat the
scan
and allow updates.

Microsoft was unavailable for comment.
