E-Mail:

Name That Extension

Well, we’ve all faced it in the past: we come upon a file with an extension we don’t recognize and we’re in a total panic about whether or not it’s safe to delete it. Or even worse, we get a file like that and an accompanying error message and we have no idea what tool we should use to open the file. FileExt.com has proven to be the answer.

The site is a no-nonsense source for extension info. The home page has a lot of information packed into it, plus a search that will either let you simply enter the extension (without the ‘dot’) to search for it or you use buttons to pick the first letter and then you scroll down the list to find your extension. A nice touch is that if there is more than one use for an extension, it will list the ones it has on file. Yes, it’s true: it doesn’t pretend to know EVERY use of an extension. It does, however, provide a means of feedback so that a user who knows about a different program than those listed that uses the same file extension can add it to the list.

All in all, FileExt.com is a site worth bookmarking.
