Modifying A Cross-Reference (Word 2002/2003)

In a previous tip, I outlined how you can create a cross-reference in Microsoft Word. A cross-reference is simply text that refers to another item in a document such as a figure, heading, and so on.

Once you have created a cross-reference, you can change it at anytime. If you want to change the cross reference text, you can directly edit the text in the document, as you would change any other text.

You can also change the item that a cross-reference refers to. You can accomplish this by first selecting the cross-reference that you want to change. From the Insert menu, point to Reference, and click Cross-reference. Using the drop down arrow under Reference type, click the new item that you want to refer to.

Is there a way to limit the text when creating a figure caption? I have figure captions that are multiple sentences long, but i do not want all these sentences to self-populate when I create my Table of Figures. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.
