Problems With The Disk Cleanup Utility

The Disk Cleanup Utility is useful in getting rid of files on your computer that are unnecessary. This is particularly handy if you are running out of disk space. In Windows XP, you can launch the utility by clicking Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools and click Disk Cleanup. A dialog box will appear where you can select the drive that you want to clean up.
I have run the Disk Cleanup utility several times. However, when I tried to clean my C drive, the utility would always hang. This problem did not occur when I selected a different volume.
If you run into this problem, you can try a couple of things to stop it from hanging. First, the problem may be due to the fact that your volume is heavily fragmented. So before you run the Disk Cleanup utility, use the Disk Defragmenter to defrag the volume.
Alternatively, the utility may be hanging because of corrupt temp files. Therefore, you should delete the files in your Temp folder. After you perform these steps, try running the Disk Cleanup utility again and you should have better luck. In other words, it should not hang on you.

For the last several days I have continually gotten this Disk Clean Up warning message- and as a total dunce when it comes to computers, I have dutifully done a disk clean up each time - and within half an hour get it again- now it only shows a total of 40 KB needing to be removed but still tells me I am dangerously low on disk space - the first time it was over 200,000 that I removed. Is this a sign that something is going wrong with my XP System? I read that you can “turn off the warning” but should I do that - or is this repeated warning a sign that I’m headed for trouble? My computer ( Dell ) seems to be working just fine. I’d appreciate your advice!

Help! Big problems with Vista Disk Cleanup. Last time I ran it, it finished and cleared my desktop of all icons and told me intelide.sys corrupted. The result was I could not reboot and my disk was trash. Luckily, I had a recent Complete PC backup. With Install disks for reboot and Complete PC Restore, back to square one. NOW, before I run Cleanup, it tells me in one file alone, there ar more GB to recover than the size of my disk. I am afraid to try another clean up. Can anybody clue me in.? Thanks.
