Training our young men and women in the traits of leadership, patriotism, and self-reliance is important if we expect them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Explorer Scouts are examples of groups that teach those values. Today we look at one that is not as well known, but is just as important.
It is called the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and this is the online presence of that organization. This corps has, as part of its charter, a mission to encourage and aid young people to develop an interest and skill in basic seamanship and in its naval adaptations, and to implement those skills. There are units located in every state, with information on how youths ages 11 to 17 can join them. Each unit has a Web site, which explains what their activities are. I visited the Web site of the one located right here in Portland, Oregon, which uses the USS Blueback (SS581) as a centerpiece of its meetings and training.
