Encrypt Offline Files (XP Pro)

Posted by on Mar 30, 2005 | No Comments

Offline files allow you to store files you normally access on the network on your local computer. This way you can access the files when you are disconnected from the network.

If you are concerned about the security of offline files, you can configure Windows XP to encrypt them. Keep in mind though that it is an all or nothing process. Either the entire offline files database is encrypted or not. You do not have the option of encrypting individual files.

You can encrypt offline files through the Folder Options dialog box.

  1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
  2. Double click the Folder Options applet.
  3. Click the Offline Files tab.
  4. Place a check beside the Encrypt offline files to secure data.
  5. Click OK.
