Users often forget to lock their workstations or log off. This means that workstations are left unattended while a user is logged on thereby creating a possible security risk. You can force users to quit all programs and log off the computer after a certain amount of inactivity.
The Windows 2000 resource kit include a tool called Winexit.scr that you can use to do just that, force users all programs to close and automatically log off the user account. You can accomplish this and increase security of your network using the steps outlined below.
- Locate the Winexit.scr file. This will be in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Folder.
- Right click the file and click Install. The Display dialog box will appear. The Logoff Screen Saver should be selected.
- Click Settings.
- Select the Force application termination option. This will force open programs to be shut down.
- Type in a value for the number of seconds that the logoff dialog box will be displayed before logging the user off.
- Type in a message that will appear during the logoff countdown.
- Click OK.
