VoIP Telephone? Must Register Separately For 911 Services!

Do you use a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service, such as Vonage, or AT&T’s Callvantage?
If so, did you know that such services do not automatically come with 911 emergency call capability? You must register separately for 911 services when you register for your VoIP service.
This isn’t due to any malicious intent on the part of the VoIP provider; it’s just a function of how VoIP works, and how it is different from using a POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) line, or a cellphone.
The problem is explained in depth, along with what can happen when a customer doesn’t realize that they need to register separately for 911 services (don’t worry, everybody lived), in Aunty Spam’s coverage of the Texas Attorney General’s lawsuit against Vonage, “VoIP 911: Weakness in VoIP 911 System Leads to Lawsuit Against Vonage.”
