When President Jimmy Carter left the White House in 1981 to resume his life as a private citizen, he had a lot of activities to occupy his time. He was (and still is) a peanut farmer, a former naval officer, former governor, and now an author. But one of his most satisfying activities, he has stated many times, is the work he does for Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat For Humanity is a world wide consortium of individuals, businesses, and churches that have a goal of helping people gain a decent place to live. They do so by building and remodeling houses in cities all over the world. In my town of Portland Oregon, they have several ongoing projects all over town, with a grassroots effort being its main strength. On this site, you can not only learn about activities in the Unites States, but the rest of the world as well.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. We welcome all people to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter.
Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 175, 000 houses, providing shelter for nearly 900,000 people worldwide. Now at work in 100 countries, we are building a house every 26 minutes. By 2005, Habitat houses will be sheltering 1 million people.
Local Habitat affiliates coordinate house building and select partner families.
