Displaying The Security Tab In XP Home Edition

Displaying the security tab in XP Pro can be achieved by disabling simple file sharing. You can accomplish this by opening the Folder Options applet in the Control Panel. Click the View tab and remove the check beside the Use simple file sharing (recommended) option.

However, if you are running XP Home Edition, the process is slightly different. With this edition of XP, Simple File Sharing cannot be disabled. Assuming that your hard drive has been formatted with NTFS, you can display the Security tab by booting into Safe Mode and logging in with the Administrator account.

If you frequently require access to the Security tab and do not want to boot into Safe Mode to access it, you can download the Security Configuration Manager (Intel Version) from Microsoft. Double click SCESP4I.EXE and extract the files to a location on your computer. Right click the Setup.inf file (this will be located in the location where you extracted the contents) and click Install. You will need to restart your computer once you are complete.

I was very grateful to find this post. I had lots of files I could no longer access after a move. I was afraid the files were corrupted but luckily it was just an access issue. After applying the steps in this post I had the security tab and was able to regain the ownership and grant the required access in Home Edition! I was slightly concerned because the KB-article did not mention XP, but since my disk is 100% NTFS I took the plunge!

This little article helped me and my friend get some files back from a hard drive from a different computer. I didn’t know such a quick easy way to ghet the “Permissions” tab in XP Home edition existed… thanks!

This was a helpful article, but I’m still having a problem. I’m using XP Home edition, and want to display the Security Tab. I followed the instructions in the article, but hit a brick wall when I was unable to find the ‘Use simple file sharing (recommended)’ option. I did open the Folder Options applet in the Control Panel, and clicked the View tab, but was still unable to find it!

I have seen the Security tab before on other computers, but not on mine. I can’t work out why, for the life of me! Please help, anyone, if you can, it’s quite important…thanks.
