When you open My Computer or Windows Explorer, all your folders have the same icon. The only way to determine the specific contents in a folder is by the folder name. Hopefully you have used descriptive names so you can easily identify what is inside.
Another option you have for making it easier to know what is stored within a specific folder is to assign a picture to it. Then when you switch to Thumbnail view, the picture you selected will be displayed on the folder to remind you of the contents.
You can assign a picture to a folder using the following steps:
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Right click the appropriate folder and click Properties.
- Click the Customize tab.
- Under Folder Pictures, click the Choose Picture button.
- Browse to and select the picture you want to use.
- Click Open.
- Click OK.

that is a great feature .. and thanks for sharing … but .. is there a quicker way ?? maybe software that randomly assigns a picture for each sub folder within a folder from a directory of pictures or photos that you choose ? i have folders and folders full of sub folders and sub folders…which would look great with a picture for each .. but assigning a pic to each one by one is so slow… thanks for your time
