Change The Way The Security Center In XP SP2 Alerts You

Service Pack 2 for XP focuses on security and adds new security related features and enhancements. It is designed to help you protect your computer and one of the ways in which it accomplishes this is by monitoring specific settings on your computers such as automatic updates, firewall, and virus protection.
Microsoft recommends that you turn on automatic updates. However, in some instances, you may need to turn it off and perform manually updates instead. For example, if you use a dial up connection, you may opt to check the Windows Update Web site on your own for updates (of course, you have to make sure you do this on a regular basis). If you disable Automatic Updates, your computer will remind you each time it boots that your computer may be at risk. You can change the way your computer alerts you using the following steps:
- Click Start and click Control Panel.
- Double click the Security Center applet.
- Under the list of Resources, click Change the way Security Center alerts me.
- Remove the check beside the Automatic Updates option.
XP SP2 will no longer alert you that the Automatic Updates option is disabled.

Thank you so much. I didn’t think this tip would work, and it not only worked but worked immediately without even rebooting. I appreciate it. :)

When I go in to change the way security center alerts me, this option is gray and it will not let me choose it. What’s my problem?

I have the same problem as Don Bragg. We have multiple machines in my department used for image capture purposes. Only 1 of 8 is grayed out, and technically all images should be the same. Why does the spot get grayed out?

I was able to click on the “Change the Way Security Center Alerts me” after I removed the machine from the domain and logged in as the local administrator. I was not able to do it by simply logging in locally. So if you are on a domain Don, try removing your machine from the domain and logging in locally.
