When I was growing up, one of my memories is the country and western music that my father used to listen to. It was Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Roy Acuff, and more. If they were on the Grand Ole Opry, he liked to listen to them. We couldn’t get that program where we lived, but their occassional personal appearances made it possible for us to see them. Well, most of the entertainers that my dad listened to have passed on. There are still a few around, however, and today we visit with one of them.
The site we are visting today is the Official Web site of Little Jimmy Dickens. He is the oldest member of the Grand Ole Opry, and even though he is “retired,” he can usually be seen every weekend hosting one of the show’s segments. He is truly a legend in the country music field, having entertained all over the world, from Southeast Asia to Germany.

James Cecil Dickens (born 19 December 1920), better known as Little Jimmy Dickens, is an American country singer and guitarist. He was born in Bolt, West Virginia, the thirteenth child in a farming family. His nickname results from the fact that he is only 4′ 11″ tall. Despite his stature, he has had great succcess, being the longest serving member of the Grand Ole Opry. Dickens was discovered singing at a nightclub in Saginaw, Michigan by country legend Roy Acuff. In 1948, Dickens became a member of the Opry. Although many of his contemporaries, such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Minnie Pearl, and Ernest Tubb have gone on to what Nashville stars call “Hillbilly Heaven,” Little Jimmy carries on the traditions. With ’60s hits like “May The Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose,” “Hillbilly Fever,” and “Out Behind The Barn,” he can fire up the 4,400 people who show up at the Opry every Friday and Saturday night to hear traditional country music and get them all to their feet like no one else can. After 57 years in the music business Little Jimmy is, as one of his hits said, still “little but loud.” [Wikipedia]

Every Time I see Little Jimmy on T.V. on that country music reunion show With Wispering Bill Anderson, Im reminded that Jimmy is a mason (masonic lodge). I would like contact him to warn him to get out of the Masonic Lodge before he dies, and encourage him to surrender to Jesus Christ as the Only Lord and only Master.
Jesus said a man can not serve two masters, he will either love one and hate the other.
Also he should repent from all those blood oaths that he has taken!
I have nothing against Jimmy personally, the masonic lodge is a enemy to the Christian Church.

I would like to know about Jimmy’s family. My grandfather Henry Gillam from Hunnewell, Kentucky said that his sister Elizabeth (Liz) who married Freddie Dickens was Jimmy’s Aunt and Uncle, and that the feather bed belonged to them. As a child, I slept on that feather bed. His sister Bertha married Caudill Dickens. Freddie and Caudill may have been brothers.
my e-mail is bob@thepenry.net.

My sisters own an old stone schoolhouse in Dennis Cove, Tennessee, near Hampton, in Carter County. We’ve heard that Jimmy Dickens attended school there one year. Can anyone provide us with information confirming this? We love to tell people this story and would like to know if it’s true. Thank you. Joy

My husband’s mother’s maiden name is Pauline Dickens. Her father was Prince Dickens. She was originally from Beckleigh West, Va. The story is that my mother-in-law is cousin to Little Jimmy Dickens. Apparently my husband’s mother did not keep in touch with extended family so her immediate family (children) have only heard stories about the relationship. We live in Baltimore and my husband always did say that it would be nice to meet Jimmy and/or even see him perform at the Grand Ole Opry, a place we would like to visit one day.

Little Jimmy, you’ve been invited to participate in an “on-air” interview with New York/New Jersey’s 91.1 WFMU Radio DJ Michael Shelly, broadcasted in the Greater New York area, and world-wide on the web. It would be a great thrill for him and a lot of fun for Mr. Dickens, so please reply to set up a date, and of course, you could post this occassion on this, your own web site where your fans can find out about it anywhere in the world. - tony

Hi. 3 or 4 yrs ago,Little Jimmy Dickens was on the opry live show, and somebody in the audience requested a song. Mr Dickens refused to do it stating that it was to long of song and it wouldn’t be fair to the other entertainers, but would maybey do it at a later date. I think it was a talking song but I can’t remember what the name of it was or how it goes. Is there anyone out there who could tell me what song it might be? If I see the name I might remember, so plz name off a few that it might be! http://www.opry.com isn’t working so I can’t go there, all I get is a big Blue Blank screen! Thank you, Kevin.

I think Jimmy is my distant cousin. My grandfather was Henry Gillam of Hunnewell, Ky. My father was Henry Gilliam (he changed the spelling). My grandfather said that Jimmy was a cousin by marriage. Related to Caudill or Freddie Dickens or both. I would like to hear from Jimmy if only to establish that relationship for my family tree. Thanks so much.

Is there a way to email Mr. Little Jimmy Dickens?? My mother-in-law’s name is Hazel Holcomb (Maiden name Ray) but she tells me she used to sing with Little Jimmy Dickens, Slim Whitman, Eddie Arnold. She says she also sang with Daisey Mae and Old Brother Charlie here in Tampa, Fl. She still lives here in Tampa and is now 77 years old. She has often remembers back to the old days with fond memories of what her life might have been. She is a wonderful lady who was denied the chance to use her wonder God given gift of Singing and playing her Guitar. I am praying that I can make this dream come true. Other wise she just have to wait until she reaches heavens shores to sing with Little Jimmy Dickens again.

Hey Jimmy. I have a son also named Rickey Dickens. He sings and writes songs down in Florida. Some of his songs are like yours. He also does the older country songs. We are origionally from Louisiana. I listened to you back in the 60’s. My father loved listening to you and always had the Louisiana Hayride on the radio.

Barb Grunow was my best friend in high school. Her parents were Tina and Red Grunow. Texas Bill lived in their lower level and let us take his Cadillac with the big bull horns out for “joy rides” while he was working. It was great fun. I would like to reconnect with Barb. I believe I have an E-Mail address but will have to check. I would be interested in any additional information in my friend.
Thanks!

As I write this I am thankfully watching and listening to the Country Family Reunion that my father bought before he passed away. He played the steal guitar as well as anyone you’ve ever heard and couldn’t read a note of music. If only the children of today could have experienced the Country Wonders ( such as Jimmy Dickens) that I grew up with. God blessed me tremendously!

Hi. I have an old photo of Jimmy Dickens and Tex Tyler ( in military uniform ) that my Mother had autographed at a concert in either 1942 or 1943. There were two other names on the back. Vern Morgan and Little Margie. This was when they all worked for WIBC in Indianapolis. Does anyone have any info as to who these other singer were? Thanks crasmuson01@hotmail.com
