Q: I’m completely new to this whole registry thing, but I would like to get started with making some tweaks in my copy of Windows XP. I’ve seen a bunch of cool things that you can do by modifying the registry keys, but I really need to know how to back up my registry, make the edits, and if all else fails, restore the registry. Where can I find a reliable guide?
A: The registry is a very scary thing to look through if you don’t know what you’re doing, but then again, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you really shouldn’t even be there unless you’re just sightseeing. First timers to modifying the registry should have a plan of action. Go into the editor with the goal of making the change that you learned about, and don’t be tempted to go hog wild with editing values for several other registry keys. Once you’re more comfortable with the process, you can feel a little freer to explore.
The most important step is to backup the registry before you make any changes, and this is a step that is often overlooked. To learn all about the backup, editing, and restoring process, check out this detailed help document from Microsoft.
