Install IIS On Windows XP

If you are running a small workgroup of computers, you may want to use a computer running Windows XP as a Web server. You can do so by installing IIS on Windows XP. It is included with Windows XP but is not installed by default. Once it has been installed, it provides for basic Web server functionality and includes the WWW, FTP, NNTP, and SMTP services.

You can install IIS using the following steps:

  1. Click Start and select Control Panel.

  2. Double click the Add or Remove Programs applet.
  3. Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
  4. Place a check beside Internet Information Services (IIS).
  5. Click Next.
  6. If prompted, insert your Windows XP CD.

Once IIS is installed, your computer running Windows XP will be able to function as a Web server. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind. You can expect to see a decrease in performance since there is an extra load being placed on the computer. Also, Windows XP is limited to the number of concurrent inbound connections that it can accept.
