Norton AntiVirus Customer Unhappiness

Can’t say I blame them…
“The last few months has seen the biggest wave of Symantec gripes since I started the Gripe Line. And that’s saying something, because customers of Norton anti virus products have long been a particularly rich source of gripe fodder. But what is it exactly that has so many readers sick of Symantec at the moment? That’s not going to be an easy diagnosis to make, because the symptoms are many.
“One reader recently provided his list of Symantec symptoms. “My dislike for Symantec products has been steadily growing primarily with the level of disaster of their Norton AntiVirus program,” the reader wrote. “Used to be something I considered standard issue for virus problems, but it has really gotten bad over the past few years, with the 2004 version being the worst I have seen. I would cite them on the following problems:
1. Installation failures that are difficult to detect/fix
2. Undetected virus infections, where other programs easily detect the infected files
3. Complicated and messy hooks into the OS
4. Conflicts with other programs resulting in poor PC performance, to the point of uninstalling
5. Poor technical support
“One specific issue that seems to have been driving this recent wave of complaints is Symantec’s policy of sunsetting support for the 2003 version of Norton products when the 2005 version is released. ‘I purchased NAV 2003 just over a year ago,’ wrote one reader. ‘Last month I paid for another year’s subscription to the Live Update service, but NAV is refusing to download any new virus definitions. It keeps telling me I have to renew my subscription, even though I have done so. I wrote Symantec asking for help, and all they told me is that support for NAV 2003 has been discontinued… It’s disgusting. I have an up-to-date subscription and a version of the software that I’ve had only a year. How can they refuse to help me?’”

They’re having problems with this - you’ll have to create an account on Symantec.com. Beyond that I’m unable to help you - please contact Symantec Customer Service:

How can I dislodge an out dated ( 2004 version) of Norton anti virus from my computer. I am told it is interfering with the efficient working of my machine. Thank you. Timothy Lane

Have another AV program available or downloaded - I recommend Avira - it’s free:
http://www.free-av.com
Enter this term in the Google search box including the quotes: “Norton Removal Tool”
Download the tool.
Disconnect from the internet.
Go Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs or Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs depending
on your Windows version.
Highlight Norton and click the Remove Button.
Reboot when/if asked.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot when/if asked.
Install the new AV program.
Reboot when/if asked.
Reconnect to the Internet and update the AV program.
Reboot when/if asked.
Check the settings on the AV program to make sure they are set properly.
Set up a scheduled scan if you desire.

Dear Mr Ericson:
This is to bring to your attention a serious problem with “microsoft windows -XP OS & Norton antivirusâ€. Recently I attempted to install “Norton Antivirus 2007†on my PC running -XP. The Norton item was purchased from a local Best buy store in Columbia, SC.
The “installation†appeared to proceed smoothly. However, the box won’t reboot & total video blackout!
This afternoon myself and two other associates (physics, Ph.D types, 20+ years in the lab) were totally stumped to see this box go through convulsions trying to boot up.
After going through several cycles of power up with just bare MB, AGP card exchanges and attempts at safe mode operation it became clear that the anti virus has screwed up/deleted some of the operating files, most likely some thing related to “Mup.sys†.
I am installing another HD & expect not to loose all the data in the other disk, but it is amazing that two major corporations Microsoft & Symantec would (graphics on box advertised compatibility with XP & Vista!) sell such sloppy products.
What action would you suggest for a Norton + Microsoft customer like myself?
Sincerely- T. Datta

Norton refuse to send me my rebate. They insist all the forms needed were not sent which is a lie and an excuse not to send rebate. Do not deal with Norton ever again.
