How Secure Are Online Data Backups?

Backing up our data with online companies or resources has been something we have all done a time or two during the last few years. Have you ever stopped to think how secure your data really is, though? Personally, I am one paranoid freak. That is why I was happy to see somebody else discussing the security issues at hand.
For starters, it is critical that your data be secure not only while in the possession of a third party but also while in transit to them. Most modern online secure data backup providers make there services available via the Internet and will provide you with the necessary software to back up a predefined set of your critical data, which is then encrypted (typically up to 448 bit), before it is transferred over a high speed connection to a secure data storage facility.
By securing your data before transferring it over the Internet, you can be assured that your sensitive data (such as financial reports, company memos, and client databases) are safe from prying eyes. For ultra-critical, or highly sensitive applications, the data may be transferred over a completely encrypted channel (also known as an encrypted “tunnel” or virtual private network).
If you will be backing up sensitive data that demands the utmost of privacy be sure to inquire about the level of encryption offered by the online secure data backup you are considering.
Personally, I will stick with burned CD backups still. Something still does not sit right when me when it comes to backing things up online. Now holiday photos or random Web cam pictures I have no problem with. Heck, who would want to pilfer through those? There is no way however that I will ever put anything important through one of these types of services.
Maybe I’m paranoid? Maybe I have been using Microsoft products way too long? The only thing I know for sure that it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your security.
