Love him or hate him, he is one of the most influential self-help therapists on the airwaves today. Actually, calling him “self-help” is probably not a good description. But describing Dr. Phil McGraw is very difficult, given his success in helping people turn their lives around. Today I look at a portion of what Dr. Phil does, and how well he does it.

Dr. Phil has many ways to help us to help ourselves.

First there is his Web site, called DrPhil.com. Here you can get the latest information on his television shows, books, radio programs, and other media outlets. But you can also get advice here, on everything from weight loss to depression, from family matters to surviving at work.

His latest book, “Family First”, provides a proven action plan to help parents
determine the strengths and weaknesses of their parenting style. His 7 Tools for Purposeful Parenting cover the most important elements for any parent: parenting for success - for the purpose of raising cooperative, caring, and competent children. It is quite intersting, as all of his books are, and one gets the feeling that they are having a conversation with Dr. Phil, and he is hearing what they say. He tells us that parents have to make changes now, not later, how to instill values in them that will make them successful adults, things like integrity, honesty, and respect for others feelings and opinions.
