How Secure Can A Wireless Network Really Be?

  • No Related Post

Q: There are several open wireless networks that I use while I’m out and about. On a couple of occasions I have done some online banking while I’m on these networks, but after reading about all of the security problems, I’m becoming a little uneasy. Should I be concerned?

A: Wireless is definitely revolutionizing the way we get connected. Everyone who uses it begins to see the benefit of not having to be chained to a cable. Along with the benefits, a whole new batch of problems begins to rise to the top. To put it in perspective, it’s common knowledge that using a direct cable connection will still give you security hassles. Just having an Internet connection at all can throw your computer into never-ending security oblivion. If a physical cable connection gives you problems, just imagine what kind of trouble you could run into while your personal data is literally floating around in the air. I don’t mean to cause undue panic with these statements, but it pays to be aware of the issues.

I have a wireless network in my house, and I absolutely love it. It’s fairly quiet around here, so I’m not overly concerned about someone snooping around my network. However, when you walk out into the public with your mobile wireless device in hand, you just never know who has a packet sniffer running on their laptop. I personally do not login to my banking account or other sensitive data while I’m on a freely available network. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. While the chances of someone actually taking the time to browse through your data may be slim, you still need to be aware that it could definitely happen. You’ll have to make the decision about whether you’re comfortable with sending your personal data through the air. Many people are paranoid about it, while others could care less and think this just isn’t an issue. They could be correct, but you never know what that guy drinking the latte in the corner is up to.
