Downloading SP2 Is A Pain. What Are My Options?

Posted by on Oct 27, 2004 | No Comments

Q: I still haven’t upgraded to Service Pack 2, and I know that I should probably do it for some of the enhanced security features. I’m on an extremely slow Internet connection, which makes downloading these updates a real hassle. Is there any chance that I can order a CD that contains SP2?

A: Patching Windows has become a necessary habit these days. We usually just brainlessly cruise on over to Windows Update and wait for the barrel full of updates to be downloaded to our computer, because we know that if we don’t, we’ll be affected by the new Windows exploit that causes a hacker to invade our computers with an errant click of the mouse.

SP2 will definitely take some time to download, which can totally prevent dialup users from obtaining it. Thankfully, Microsoft is offering a free CD that it will mail to you that contains SP2 in all of its… glory? That means you can just pop it into your drive and get the new Service Pack without having to download it from the Internet. If you’re interested, you can order it here.

It would be a good idea to distribute the CD to some of your friends who are on slow Internet connections, as well. Let’s just hope that SP2 doesn’t render their machines useless.
