E-Mail:

Staying In Touch Via Discussion Groups

Q: I’d like to start a simple e-mail discussion group that would allow my family and friends to stay in touch with me. What are the free options that exist?

A: Discussion groups present a great way to build your very own community. A few years ago, I used to be extremely active in multiple programming groups, and I’m very thankful that they existed. Using these groups, you can manage large amounts of people, and allow them to all be on the same page. Besides simple group e-mail functionality, many services provide space for files, chat rooms, and more. We often think in terms of using these lists to primarily keep in touch with friends and family, but the range of functionality makes them a great choice for business use, as well. These groups help to eliminate the faceless entity aspect of businesses today, and give your customers the chance to directly talk with you and other customers. You’ll probably notice more visits to your Web site, and an increase in sales.

Considering the fact that many of these services are free, you really have no reason not to try them out. You’ll notice some ads here and there, but they have to pay the bills somehow. The ads don’t discount the fact that these services serve a great purpose. To get started, look through the three options below.

Yahoo! Groups
Topica
MSN Groups

Whether it’s for connecting with your family or your customers, discussion groups provide that personal touch that keeps people coming back.
