Q: I’ve grown tired of the Windows desktops and icons that were included with my system. I want more pizzazz on my computer! Where can I go for some awesome-looking wallpapers and icons?
A: Customizing your computer in this way helps you really make it your own, and not just a generic box. We all have different preferences when it comes to the way we think our desktop elements should look. No matter what type of style you like, I can almost guarantee that a designer has put together a collection of resources that’ll make your eyes happy.
Stop what you’re doing right now and head on over to Pixelgirl Presents. For the last six months or so, my desktop has only been occupied by the selection of fabulous wallpapers that can be found here. You can also replace your bland icons with the innovative ones that are found on this site. This is truly a hidden gem on the Internet that more people need to know about. In my opinion, it’s simply the best. Better than all the rest. Hey, even Tina Turner agrees with me.
Another great resource for desktop pictures and icons is deviantART. This site is wildly popular, and you’ll soon see why. A bunch of beautiful art can be found lurking around the pages. If you’re still left wanting more, check out a-negative for a selection of attractive wallpapers.
Who knows? If you put together a fantastic desktop design, you may even be asked to put it on exhibit at the Louvre. Don’t quote me on that.
Have a question or subject that you would like to see covered? Drop Brandon a line and maybe he can include it in a future edition of the Gnewbie Gnook! Also, don’t forget our forums (or, if you’re a Latin freak, “fora”) where Gnomies from all around the world congregate to help, be helped, and discuss issues that may or may not have anything to do with technology!
