Have you ever heard of geocaching? If not, let me explain the concept. The idea is that individuals and organizations set up caches (or treasure chests, for the pirates in the audience) in any number of locations around the world, and they then share the location of the cache on the Internet. You can then use a GPS device to locate the hidden treasure by using these coordinates. Any number of things can be found in the cache, but the rule is that if you take something, you should leave something. It’s a fun activity that is perfect for the adventurous geek. To learn more about this sport, visit the official Geocaching site.
If you’d still like to learn more about how all of this works, the site features a collection of resources that will help you to get started. This wouldn’t be a geocaching site without a geocache locator, and as you can imagine, there’s one for you to use. I was surprised at how many caches are located in my own area. This explains where that box in my front yard came from, and why there are always people meandering around my property. You’ll also find out how to start a new cache and post the coordinates for all of the intrepid adventurers to see. The forum will allow you to tell that fake story about how you almost got attacked by a bear on your last geocache. There’s some great stuff here, and it really makes me wish that I had a GPS device so I could take part in the festivities.
