What This Geek Daddy (Did and) Didn't Do On His Summer Vacation
I didn’t do a lot on my summer vacation. Or maybe I did. Looking back, it’s
hard to imagine how fast the days flew by … wasn’t it just June? So just what
did this crazy geek daddy do on his summer vacation? Well, I started each day
by writing a little something for Lockergnome. Not being tied down by a real
job has its advantages, I suppose. (I won’t bore you with the disadvantages.)
Lets just say that writing for Lockergnome is a very cool gig that lets my research-crazed
brain wander in fifty-thousand directions (at least) at once…
I didn’t refinance
online or take out a home
equity loan, but I did dutifully (and happily) continue to make the payments
on my existing obligations.
I didn’t buy a new ergonomic
chair or lamp for my office (and I really need one), but I did fit most
of the fixtures in the house with compact
fluorescent bulbs to cut down on our electric bills.
I didn’t build any new websites, but I did continue to look into a dedicated
host.
I didn’t find the perfect business
opportunity for myself, but I got some business
cards printed for my brother-in-law.
I briefly thought about, but didn’t attend a MCSE
Boot Camp… consequently, I didn’t apply for that call
center help
desk job.
I didn’t cure
my Insomnia, but thankfully I’m still
spyware free (which certainly makes it a bit easier to sleep at night).
While I didn’t toss the T-Mobile service for my Sidekick,
I did finally ditch my landline in favor of a VOIP
phone.
But that’s not all…
I began researching all kinds of cool geek stuff, from fax
servers, online
meeting software, and data
warehousing through network
monitoring software, electronic
medical records, and enterprise
portals.
On the homefront, I didn’t continue my oh-so-brief volunteer youth soccer coaching
career, but I did find a way to fill that free time (with my new hobby of carving
tikis). And while we didn’t get to take that expensive trip to Hawaii, I
did get to spend every day with the kids… a whole bunch of those days, thankfully,
at the Jersey Shore… where the days are long and the boogie boarding rules …
