Loving My Mac Still…

But I’m hating the Safari 3 Beta. And I can’t downgrade because the last version won’t work with Flash properly. That would mean I couldn’t play Scrabulous at Facebook. How the hell would I procrastinate then?

So you are hating the Safari 3 beta on your Mac. Question: I assume you are running 10.4.x (Tiger) - Why don’t you just install the non-beta version (final release) of 3.0.4 that came out recently for Tiger? Safari is no longer in beta on OS X. The Windows version is still in beta (3.0.4 beta).

I dig. When I went to the page, it said it was still Beta. Here’s where I installed it from earlier this week:
http://www.apple.com/safari/
Maybe I’m wrong about it being beta on the page, but whatever it is, it’s sucking for me. It actually sucked worse the last time I got the update pushed from Apple. And my Software Update link isn’t pushing me anything new.
Thank you so much for caring… if you know something I don’t know, do tell.

In order to get the final release version of Safari 3 for Tiger you have to run Software Update from the Apple menu and make sure that you install the 10.4.11 download. That should get you away from the beta version of Safari 3.

Yeah, that’s what I’m saying, I did that, and probably more than a week ago, and tried it again yesterday just to be sure. So I’m possibly wrong about it being beta (in which I’d expect problems, but not for such a little update), but I still have major problems with it.
Thanks for your input.

What specifically are the problems you are having with 3.0.4? Pages not working right, appearance problems, performance issues, etc. ?
Do you have any input managers installed such as ad blockers or other enhancements? I’m not trying to point blame at you or at a 3rd party add-on, but just ruling out possibilities.
Another thing you could do is “Reset Safari” from the main menu, clearing your cookies and history, and if all else fails, deleting your preferences file and starting completely over with it (which should be the same as “Reset Safari” I believe).
Which version of Flash do you have installed? You can test it by going to a Flash site and right-clicking and choosing “About”
What other plugins do you have installed? Check in Help -> Show Plug-Ins within Safari.
Make sure you don’t have PowerPC plug-ins installed if your computer is Intel based, this can cause serious problems.
I don’t mean to “grill” you - I just want to help, and the more info I have the better I can do that. :)

Anthony,
I *love* that you’re grilling me. I used to be in tech support, so I can appreciate useful questions from people trying to help me.
Problems I’m having with 3.0.4 (523.12):
*Flash responds really slowly. ( I have version 9, upgraded about three weeks ago when prompted by some game I used to play.)
*Visual and text editors work differently than they did in Safari before, and do now in Firefox - Safari just used to ignore the ones that didn’t work properly. I thought it was a WP bug, but other browsers behave differently.
*Pages SEEM to load slower than they did before, and definitely slower than Firefox. But that could be my perception as well, as I have optimized the speed in Fox.
Plugins:
Adobe Acrobat and Reader Plug-in
ActiveTouch General Plugin Container
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r47
Flip4Mac Windows Media Plugin 2.1
DivX Content Upload Plug-In
JoostPlugin
Veoh Web Kit Plug-In
QuickTime Plug-In 7.3
RealPlayer Plugin.plugin
Quartz Composer Plug-In
NPVeohVersion plugin
Java Plug-in for Cocoa
iPhotoPhotocast
DivX Browser Plug-In
I have cleared Safari’s cache, reinstalled Safari and reset Safari. I didn’t think of resetting Safari until you told me though.
I don’t know of any plugins I have that could be PowerPC - I usually check that plugins are for Intel Macs, though I also assume they wouldn’t be compatible.
Thanks VERY much for the grilling, actually. If you’re not a Mac “genius” you should be. :)
