Facebook Connections – Not With Google
With Google rolling out all of this emphasis on the social web, it’s rather shocking that there is no usage of Facebook connections, as it is certainly available for Google to use.
What’s also interesting is how Google is leaving the beta label on the social search, despite the fact they feel like it’s something people want to use – today, now.
Are we to believe that social media is truly where search is headed? Despite Google’s instance that there is still much to do in this arena, I believe that social search is best for trend spotting, perhaps some news discovery. But it lags behind in comparison to typical search.

Google keeping the beta label on is nothing to shout home about. Google often keep products “beta” for years and years, even after mainstream adoption (gmail being the perfect example).
Being “beta” for Google doesn’t mean that it’s not ready for production use, or that it’s unstable. It just means that it’s relatively new and likely to have significant developments in the near to medium future. It also adds a little “fun” into the equation, you get to use something that seemingly isn’t in use by a lot of people and that makes you feel somewhat privileged.

Dave Allan’s comment above seems plausible to me.
Can we now take the conversation forward to explore topics such as:
Is there a best practice way to use Google for social marketing?
Are there things we should be doing on Google now taht we have not been doing heretofor?
How does Google Wave fit into the picture?
How many social presences are we supposed to keep current? I am having trouble keeping up with twitter, friendfeed, Facebook, My Space, Xing, ecademy, Ziggs, Ryze, Viadeo, Konnects and the same can be said for free blogging platforms.
Naturally, I want to do the right thing and add value to the cybersocialty while simultaneously eeking out a few bones to help retirement and build up a war chest for hospital expenses and my funeral.
Ergo. I can’t truly claim that I am completely in it for the “fun” of socializing.
This is why I would like you to keep pushing this topic by bending and twisting it.
