Tweetless Teens Totally Twueless

There should be an image here!I guess if we say it enough it will come true. According to this recent post over at Mashable, teens don’t really use Twitter all that much. And while I am not in a position to say yes or no to this, I think there is likely some truth to this. Think about it. Kids today need to fill their vacuum packed brains with as much crap as possible.

Clearly, Facebook and Myspace have plenty of idiotic games and quizzes available to ensure that kids will never need subject themselves to the outside world. Because Twitter requires a bit more interaction that Myspace and Facebook talking “at each other”, many teens just are not seeing the appeal.

As for the assertion that teens are twitter shy and what will this mean to Twitter’s future, it means nothing. As they grow up, chances are pretty good they will realize just how useless the other social platforms really are. FriendFeed, sure. But Facebook and Myspace are just excuses to bother me as far as I am concerned.

Seems to me logical for a couple of reasons:

1- Not every teen has the ability (intended as economical, technical or of “tecnological availability”) to use Twitter and social netowrks with the same ease and little costs as they do for “traditional” chatting systems (SMS, MMS,…)
2- Themes on social networks are for a little more aged people: this doesn’t mean that everything is for people aged 20 and up, but this is the main cluster for social networks and makes the difference
3- When you’re teen, hopefully, you’ve got something litlle more interesting than posting on Twitter and Facebook ;-)

Ha! I guess that must make me a teenager then, despite being a month short of my 30th birthday - that makes me feel a bit better about myself :)

I just don’t “get” twitter, it seems mostly pointless to me, whereas facebook makes so much more sense as it allows for more rounded social interaction. Facebook isn’t all about pointless “vampires versus pirates” games and suchlike, you can totally ignore the crap and use it for it’s primary purpose, which is keeping in touch with your social networks. If it weren’t for facebook I’d probably have several fewer friends as it can be so hard to sustain a relationship with people that you don’t bump into regularly when you’re a busy person - facebook really has saved my social life! Twitter seems to me like a very shallow form of communication - you can’t really interact socially in one sided one liners! The only reason I’ve got a twitter account is because of the very useful mashups that are available that use twitter to do things like update your calendar or to do list. I follow a few friends & organisations on twitter but rarely actually read their tweets as I can glean so much more from their facebook pages.

Myspace on the other hand really is for teenagers and musicians, I visit myspace about once every two months just in case someone has tried to contact me via my page but otherwise avoid it!

Twitter is as useless as any other social network. Who uses Twitter anyway? Mostly the media, people on the web marketing industry and more savvy tech users.

Twitter is snob. Everybody who want’s to be “in” needs to be on Twitter and that really damages it’s image, not only with the younger crowd but with other age groups as well.
