Is Google Voice A Threat To Skype?

There should be an image here!In a few instances, I have found myself questioning this very same thing. Clearly, Google Voice is pretty cool. However it is worth noting that it is hardly a standalone application. Basically, it’s voicemail with reverse call forwarding.

As a Skype user, I have found that I use this service much more. Why? Because it does not require me to provide another number to ring through to when someone wants to call me. It’s right there, running on my PC anytime I want to use it.

At the end of the day, I see Skype failing big time in the mobile space while continuing to grow on the desktop. And I see the reverse happening with Google Voice.

I agree on this, but on the other side I also think that Google voice has the advantage of offering a good set of features that could be appealing also to Skype users.

It’s a big match, but I think that Skype is a little advantaged, because of the installed base.

I won’t be switching to the new Google voice. I’m sticking with Skype. I feel Google are getting to big for their own boots and talking things away from the smaller company’s that deserve it more.

I don’t understand this. All GVoice does is give you a unifying telephone number that then rings (or SMS’s) your other numbers. You need a cell, pots, or VoIP line to make calls with GVoice. How is this like Skype, a VoIP service?

In fact, I would see them working together. People call your GVoice number, which then tries your SkypeIN number, then cell phone, then office.

GVoice is not a VoIP service. How would it it compete with a VoIP service?

    No. No.

    God, no.

I’d prefer to have the creative control over my blog and use a plug-in to update Facebook — and I’m someone who has next to no readers of my blog. Imagine how the people who actually have a following feel.
