Much like anything dealing in fear or greed, malware always seems to find a way to ride the latest trends despite the best efforts of today’s security professionals. This time, with the Swine Flu scare, we are seeing most problems coming with those looking at the opportunistic approach vs the outright malicious.

As someone who loves living in a free enterprise system himself, I have no issues at all with worthwhile, valuable information being sold to those wishing to absorb it. Sadly, most of the stuff using the recent trends with the Swine Flu epidemic.

As you can see with this comparison, trends can often lead to more problems that solutions. Back in 2005, it was the Bird Flu that was to be mankind’s undoing. In 2009, it is the Swine Flu and perhaps in 2010… the common cold will mutate into an eight legged monster that snorts up its victims through a straw. The point is this: Do not profit on other people’s fears unless you are actually providing real value and a solution. Do not get swept up with the latest Google Trends, either.
