Making Free Calls With Jaxtr

Posted by on Apr 17, 2009 | 6 Comments

Hate to admit it, but before today I have never even heard of Jaxtr at all. Clearly, VoIP comments on Twitter are still a work in progress for @Jaxtr, despite them maintaining a fair presence on the social networks otherwise.

The way the service works is as follows. The user dials into a toll free number from wherever (mobile/land line), then Jaxtr SMS’ a message to the people you wish to speak to. Apparently, from then on, you are able to speak to folks for free. Sounds like a bit confusing to me, but its a free phone call. Who is going to complain about that? Best of all, there is no need to visit the Jaxtr website. That is right, you can do the entire thing without ever visiting, according to the article linked above. No websites to visit, free phone calls, not too shabby!

Then there is the option where the same user can instead, choose to pay for a low cost connection as to connect with your contacts immediately. Still, it should be noted that this is hardly the only way to make free phone calls, as Chris points out below.

Google Docs needs to become more mainstream, as so few people know about it. I would love to use it for everything, but it seems like Microsoft Word is required in most school environments including mine.

Interesting. Care to do a test run between office live apps and Google docs? I haven’t used tbe latter much since office apps came out so I was just wondering what your perspective would be.

the text editor is okay but the spreadsheet and presentation apps are poor.

I’ve only ever used the text editor. One thing I LOVE about Google Gocs is doing things collaboratively, working together on the same doc at the same rime. Simply amazing! I also really like the way they include chat at the side. It’d be nice if the chat was as full featured as Google Talk though. Video/VoIP right in Docs would be nice. Instead, I typically hd a Skype call as I’m working on a Doc.

For what it’s worth, you probably pressed ctrl+X (cut), which would explain it all disappearing. Very easy to do as X and C are next to each other. The good thing is that actually, even if you couldn’t undo, all your text was probably in the clipboard anyway.
