Anyone worrying about the view from a public street and then feigning indignation while pretending to be a crusader for privacy, freedom and democracy needs to be asked what is their REAL motivation for writing such a one sided article.

Does the "crusader" have business ties with or receive compensation benefits from Microsoft or any of Google's competitors?

Well by the first amendment I can take a picture of anyone I feel like it, and there isn't a think anyone can do about it. The twisted thing is it can go as far as someone putting a camera at the end of a staircase and take video or pictures of a female's underside with out her permission and /or knowledge, but if its a miner that's a different story. so the point being is that privacy is a myth.

Another thing its not true that a criminal can use it to find out if your home of not because those photos are taken once and it would more likely be years before they do it again and the air photos are refreshed like every month or so (i don't keep track) and that doesn't have much detail. anyways any info he can see in the photo has changed by now besides its no different than walking or driving by and taking photographs to decide robbery.

What do I think?

I think Eric L. needs to learn the difference between "your" and "you're" and that Chirag Tarkar shouldn't be using this forum to spam.

Beyond that, Google should not be trespassing on private property nor ignoring reasonable allowances people make for their privacy.

To the nincompoop who stated: "Complete privacy does not exist in this world except in a desert, and anyone who is not a hermit must expect and endure the ordinary incidents of the community life of which he (or she) is a part.", pull your head out of your backside and wake up to the fact that just because you can drive somewhere and take a picture does not mean you should.

Common sense should tell you that if someone has a sign posted that indicates "no trespassing" or "private" that you and anyone who works for you should keep out. Your status as a world-class search provider does not grant you immunity from arrest and or the possibility of making the acquaintance of a shotgun.

Privacy may not mean much to you, but to many people in the United States, it is still a much cherished part of their rights as an American citizen.

I'm a firm believer in all the privacy I can maintain, but according to most law in the United States, at least, anything visible from a public street can be photographed without further permission required. There are two exceptions that I know of: one is a posted government site for security reasons. The other seems to have been violated sometimes by Google, as you must be on a public road or public land, like a public park. Private roads can not be used, whether posted or not.

Regarding this "In fact, I suspect that if you or I were to do the same thing, someone would call the police and we’d have some difficult questions to answer down at the station." A lot of police do not understand this, but you can do exactly as hypothesized and it will be entirely legal as long as you are on a public road.
A few good starting points for discussion of these rights:
http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm, http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/andrewkantor/2006-08-11-photography-rights_x.htm and http://www.nppa.org/news_and_events/news/2005/08/rights.html and an older, but very relavent thread http://www.photosig.com/go/forums/read?id=206320

The only true privacy that can be expected to some degree is what goes on inside ones home, and even that can and has been improvised by the US and Local Government.

If your going to walk around your property naked, pick your nose, masturbate, or have sex outside your house, one must suspect that someone could be watching, from either the property line, over a fence, from flying over in a plane, or even from a Satellite.

So if your going to be doing something that you feel you wouldn't like the world to know about than you should do it behind closed doors/inside a dwelling of some sort.

As Google pointed out if you find pics of your property that you don't approve of, then all it takes is a form being filed out and they will gladly remove them.

My opinion of doing any of the above outside on my property is... If you want to watch, go ahead.... If it offends you in some way, you have the right not to look and turn your head. If Google wants to take pictures and people want to watch.... All the power to them. I hope they enjoyed the show.
